Stereo not working 700 1989

The stereo in my '89 740 GLE is not working. The head unit lights up, but there is no sound. I'm pretty sure this car has an amplifier, and suspect that might be the problem. Has anyone else had this issue? Would it be worth just replacing the amp, or should I just go ahead and install a new stereo? Also, does anyone know who makes the factory components and speakers? I can see the speakers are coaxial, and I'm assuming they are decent quality. Basically, I'm wondering if I upgrade the stereo, can get away with using the stock speakers for a while. Thanks, Ron
