Removing Ball Joints - Aluminum Control Arms 900 1993

I'm doing a front end overall and have everything removed except the ball joints.

I've soaked with Pblaster and tried supporting the stud from the bottom and smacking the top control arm. I'm nervous about beating the aluminum control arm to much. I'm using a brass drift to attack the control arm. I'm supporting the ball joint stud with a bottle jack, do I need something more rigid? I can rent a pickle fork or ball joint puller. Which is recommended? I've found with pickle fork there is usually no going back as the rubber boot is destroyed.

THe joints are a bit loose but not terrible but I thought I might as well replace since its all torn apart. any other suggestions?

thanks,
Matt
