Will the car operate normally without the cluster installed? 200 1989

Greetings Fellow Volvo Enthusiasts,

I am pretty sure I need to send my instrument cluster off for repair. I changed the odometer gear and installed a tach a few years ago and have had trouble-free operation. However, this afternoon my speedometer refused to budge from 0. Everything else is working normally - the odometer is clicking away, the tach works, fuel and engine temp are all fine. I wiggled/pushed in all of the wires in the back of the cluster and nothing. I don't think it's the sender in the differential - wouldn't that mean my odometer wouldn't work as well?

At any rate, I remember reading something long ago about the alternator function being attached to the cluster. I couldn't find the post now that I needed it.

Long story short - can I drive my car (my only car) without the cluster while it's off for repair? I'd use my GPS for speed and just keep it gassed up!

It's a 1989 245.

Thanks for your time and advice.
