Flakey big tach 200 1989

I have a tachometer in my instrument cluster. A few months ago it stopped working while I was driving- 0 RPM. Sometimes it randomly starts working again while I'm driving but then it usually dies again.

I checked the connections in the back of the instrument panel- they appear to be good. What would cause the tachometer to only work sporadically? Is the tach itself flakey?

I have the 52mm mini-clock wired to it, which is likewise non-functional. I wondered if it was a issue with the wire going to the tach, so today when I was driving and the tach started working I readjusted the clock. It seemed like the tachometer promptly died again when I did this, so maybe that's related?

I think my next step is probably to check the cable to the tach with a multimeter while the engine is running, but I'm curious if anyone has any insight.
