Replacing catalytic converter 1984 Volvo 245 DL 1984

I failed my CALIFORNIA SMOG TEST DUE TO A old rotten CAT.
i'M LOOKING TO ORDER A CA approved cat and have an exhaust shop remove the bum cat and install the new cat.
I've found a CA approved cat Magnaflow Catalytic Converter from Autoparts warehouse for $178 including shipping. When I contacted Autoparts the guy said the cat would need to be modified even though its a cat for my model 1984 Volvo 245 DL. He said autoparts warehouse do not carry a CA approved fitted cat for my model which would cost over $300.

My question is how big a deal would it be for me to get the Magnaflow which is rated for my model and have someone who does welding, i.e. and exhaust shop install? Does it still make sense? Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks. Robin Davidson
