Distributor alignment 444-544

You didn't mention which engine you have but I'll make an assumption it's a B18 or 20. I do not have experience with the B16 so I don't know if it works in a similiar fashion. You also did not indicate whether you have a vacuum advance--or vacuum retard. Take the distributor out and do a partial mock fitting holding it in a way that will allow enough rotation to get proper timing setting. I think originally the slash on the distributor rim indicating #1 should basically point towards the front corner of the block. Rotate the motor to align the timing marks on the pulley with the pointer on the timing cover and the valves set for #1 firing position (if you get this wrong you'll only have to switch the wires at the cap--#1 for #4 and #2 for #3 afterwards). Now note how the offset drive on the distributor is aligned. Pull out the driveshaft/gear so you can realign it to wind up in the proper position to accept the offset drive. Keep in mind that as you engage the camshaft gear with he driveshaft, the driveshaft will rotate some. Look down the opening so you can see the slot in the oil pump. Use a long straight screwdriver to align the oil pump so it will accept the flat drive at the bottom of the driveshaft--I think that's where you got off track with your first attempt. Once the driveshaft/gear drops into the oil pump slot (may take a bit of trial and error--or rocking the motor by the front pulley to make the final line-up) the distributor will drop into place. -- Dave
