odometer problem....not gears 200 1983

My odometer cable keeps backing out of the odometer slot or hole. Push it back in and it works. The black piece on the back of the cluster to hold it in does not do its job. Also my Speedo bounces at high speeds. I don't know if they are related.
I'm 1400 miles shy of 250,0000.
Any ideas for a fix or repair. Do I need a new cable?
