submerged fuel hose question 200

I have an 85 245 with gunk in the gas tank. The gas smells like acetone. the submerged fuel hose and 12v pump wire insulation was completely dissolved but the plastic housing for the pump was fine. I'm guessing it was some kind of injector cleaner that was never flushed. This site: http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm suggests a vinyl tube hack for a dissolved submersible hose. does anyone know if that's a permanent fix? I heard that vinyl tube can't be used for a gas line (legally) because it gets brittle and might break, but that may be caused by engine heat which wouldn't be a problem inside the tank. Does anyone have a definitive word on this?

thanks
Bill
