Top gasket of water pump leaking a bit - 1993 240 200

Dealing with WP removal--or repositioning does not involve touching the timing belt so that's not a factor. If you go to a Volvo dealer for the parts you'll need you can buy a "water pump installation kit" that will include the upper "O" ring--the water pipe "O" ring--and the paper water pump to block gasket as well as new bolts and nuts. When installing the pump -- put the water pipe "O" ring on the pipe - not into the pump - and apply a little vaseline or grease to both "O" rings. While some suggest "jacking" the pump upward I think that is unneccessary overkill. I get all the bolts and nuts started in their threads (except for the bottom most bolt) and gently run them in (not tight) so the pump is parallel to the block. I use the bottom most bolt hole to lever the pump straight up with a philips screwdriver--or other round shank shaft. Then tighten the bolts and nuts while applying pressure upwards--install the bottom bolt afterwards. The pressure you apply upward with a 8 inch long tool will be more than enough to properly squish the upper seal. The pump will not be absolutely flush with the bottom of the head - there will be a little gap between the head and pump. Remember--the bolts and studs are only 6mm in diameter so require care not to overtighten/snap them. -- Dave
