Slow 2-1 shift AW71-L 900 1993

The auto trans AW71L in my 940 feels like its having problems shifting from 2 down to 1. The problem presents itself as I am slowing to a stop. Right as the car stops moving (or sometimes even after I've come to a stop) I'll get what feels like a little tap in tap in the rear bumper. I assume this is the trans shifting down into 1st gear. It has been doing this for the past ~12 months regardless of the ambient temp.

The car has 308,000 miles.
I replace the trans fluid every ~30k miles I use Mobil 1. I am due for a change but the fluid is still red not brown. Level seems good but you know its hard to really tell exactly. (its in the middle of the stick when hot)

The trans mount has 100+k on it, I plan to replace it soon.

I'm hoping a fluid flush and trans mount will help things but what about:

worn check balls in the valve body
sticky or mal-adjusted kickdown?

The car pulls strong through all the gears and otherwise drives great.

Look forward to feedback.
Matt
