Distributor 90 Degree realignment and Static Timing 444-544

pmj;

I'll reiterate the 90Degree suggestion and try to explain it so you can follow it...knowing how to static time would be helpful, and I've written these instructions usable for B16 OR B18.

1. Decide in which direction you would prefer to rotate Dist body to get the clearance you need.
2. With Ign OFF, Observe Timing marks on crankshaft and manually rotate crankshaft (in the normal running direction) to your desired Timing point for No1 TDC.
3. Remove Dist Cap (with wires in place), note from which station, wire runs off to Plug No1, and note that Rotor is also pointing to that station (when Cap is in place).
4. Loosen Timing locking arrangement (a nut on a B18) and rotate Dist body a little less than 90Degrees to the new, preferred position.
5. Hold cap in the new position over Dist body and relocate wires 90 Degrees such that Plug Wire No1 is once again at location where Rotor is still pointing.
6. Secure Dist Cap into its normal position on Dist Body.

You have now turned Dist 90Degrees. Finish by Static Timing:

1. Remove Spark Plug wire from Plug No1 and lay it on Valvecover such that you can see spark when it occurs.
2. Turn Ign ON.
3. Rotate Dist body OPPOSITE its normal direction of rotation (That means rotate it CW for a B18!) until you see spark...then back up and repeat until you can stop rotating Dist Body IMMEDIATELY after spark occurs (this will determine accuracy of your static timing job!). You are now Static timed! Turn Ign OFF.
4. Replace Spark plug wire No1. Lock Dist Body in place. Start normally and use Timing Light to doublecheck timing if necessary. Voila!

Good Hunting!
