Windshield Wipers Erattic Behavior 200

240DL, 1990

I'm seeing some erratic behavior from the windshield wipers.

- Turn the lever up and they go on, turn it down and they go on. One of these should be the intermittent setting.

- Turn them on and they will not always turn off. What finally turns them off is turning off the motor and then restarting it, or sometimes turning them to the off position and ~1 minute later they stop, or sometimes turning the lever to the opposite position (i.e. if turned up, then turn them down below the off position) and then turning them to the off position. The only one that is so far consistent is turning the motor off.

Possibly a switch that is starting to go bad?

Any thoughts and if it is the switch, is it easily accessible?

Also, the wiper mechanism is very loud; the longer it runs, the louder. If I turn them off (when they do go off) and turn them back on, the noise is not quite as loud.

This is not a motor noise, rather the mechanical turning of the wiper arms. Is there any way to lubricate them somehow so they are less noisy?

Thanks
