740 Air Con TX Valve? 700 1990

The compressor in my mum's 1990 740 siezed yesterday and needs replacement. Car has standard AC, not climate control.
When I took it to a shop to get a quote they were talking about a TX Valve. They said it might be under the dash.
I've heard of this TX valve - is it the same thing as the expansion valve or something else entirely?
I don't want them ripping the dash out if there is no such thing as a TX valve or if it is located somewhere else.
Thanks for any help.
