oil in the plastic air intake tube 900

I have a 1994 940 with an odd problem. every 6 months or so (when I check) I find a small puddle of oil in the bottom of the plastic air intake tube just below where the oil separator hose is attached. I have replaced the oil separator along with the hose that extends from the bottom of the oil separator into the crankcase (a 'fun' job). the flame arrestor is coated with a fine film of oil. I know where the oil is coming from, but why. I have had 5 other volvos (740 and 940) and have never seen this problem. any ideas.
