Kickdown cable replacement. How difficult to replace? 200 1986

Hey, that was really helpful. Got the new cable in.

I considered dropping the valve body (I used to be a camera repairman in the Navy, back when the cameras had moving parts!).

But I had no "spotter" and I'm in a cold, poorly-lit garage, so I was afraid about losing parts. I was able to "fish" the cam around and hold it Joe's way.

Coupla suggestions--

1) Inserting the new fitting into the housing will scrape a lot of junk off the top of the housing, and some of that will come through the hole into the transmission. It would have been better to blast the old one with brake cleaner to knock as much as possible off before hand.

2) The old cable fitting is plastic and will probably come to pieces as you try to pull it out. I found it best to reach up in from below and deliberately break off the inside plastic tips. That way I had (a little!) control on which way the pieces went.

3) On close examination, I found that the old black plastic fitting had a black rubber "O" ring in a slot. The new fitting had a shallower depression for what might have been intended to hold an "O" ring. The new cable had no "O" ring included. I put a new "O" ring of similar size as the old on the new fitting, but found it was too tight to push all the way in. So I took it off and "glommed" it with RTV.


Re-assembling the pan and new filter, and adjusting the cable next. Then on to the steering rack... sigh.

After that, heater blower replacement, which looks like a lot of disassembly to get to. I may just put up with the rattling noise for a while.
