You don't state if you richened the carburetors. Not doing so would certainly explain the symptoms.

Stahl make the headers in whatever diameter you ask for. Mainly 1 5/8", but you could get 1.5", and at one time 1.375" were listed .
I doubt they sold many of those, though for many street driven hobby cars they would be the best for b18's in near stock configuration, and possibly on up.
