299500 miles and I hope that my heater core isn't leaking... 700 1990

Howdy folks! I'm excited to have rolled over 299500 miles yesterday.

Small problem though... I think my heater core may be leaking. And I think that's about a 20-hour job to replace a $400 part.

What are the signs and symptoms of a leaking heater core?

I don't have any coolant accumulated on the floor, but I can faintly smell it, and the really worrisome thing is that I'm getting a film of oily gunk on the inside of my windshield. I turned on the defroster, and it seemed to get worse.
What are my chances of fixing this with some radiator stop-leak?
Could it be an under-hood leak somehow getting pulled into the vents? My instincts say no.

The only unusual thing I've done to it lately is drive it quite hard a few times, but not for long amounts of time. I have been losing miniscule amounts of coolant (HG is good, engine is recently "new") like two cups in 2000 miles.

I really hope it's not the heater core.
Cheers and happy new year!
