With these sub 0*f temps come the usual warnings about car batteries, and I was hit with it. My 4 y/o battery seems to have said f u I quit. Or so I thought. While stopped at an intersection (at night, lights on, heater blasting, etc.) it shut off. I managed to start it and get home. Tried to start it hours later and it needed to be jumped. After jumping it the 'check engine' light came on. I honestly have no idea how to retrieve codes to determine what it is but I disconnected the battery and reconnected it and that cleared it. That night bought a new battery. The next day while the car was idling at work, 'check engine' came on again. I assumed that the first time was due to a 'battery voltage too low/high' issue (having looked up possible check engine codes with hopes i could figure out how to retrieve them). But this threw me off having a new battery now. Do I clear it again and hope it doesnt happen again or do I figure out what is causing it? How do I retrieve the code if it does happen again? What direction do I start looking in for the cause?
