960 cruise control won't shut off 900

I leave the cruise control switch set to "on" all the time. When we left home Friday, as soon as I reached 70mph the cruise set it self and took over (I had not hit the "set" function since starting the car). I tried to slow down to turn a corner, but the cruise held the throttle open at 2000rpm. Turning the switch off and stepping on the brake would not release the cruise. That was scary. When I'd let off the brake, the cruise would accelerate again. I pulled to the side of the road, put the car in park, and the engine raced to >5000rpm, then returned to normal idle. I shut the car off for a minute, then restarted it (cruise switch set to "off"). Car worked ok, but the roads were icy so I didn't want to take a chance on having the cruise stick "on" again so I haven't tried to turn it on due to the road conditions. Any idea what would cause this? How do I keep it from happening again? Where can I add a "kill" switch to make sure I can switch it off if it happens again? Thanks.
Marlin
