The tone ring has 60 slots and a blank space where there are no slots. That space should be visible through the starter hole when the motor is set to tdc #1.
Use the tdc mark on the front pulley, and look at the cam lobes for #1. When both valves are closed and the tdc mark is set, it will be tdc #1.
Make sense? I'm sure there's pics of this on google etc.
Although timing has to be precise, because there are 6 bolts for the flex plate there are only 6 possible ways to put the plate on, and 5 of them are clearly wrong.
