Eliminate the power steering? 200 1990

Daughters '90 240 has a power steering leak. In this endless winter it's too cold to really see where the leak is but I suspect the high pressure hose ... worth about $100 or more and climbing under the car on the ice. Meantime it might also be the "rack". Any of you ever just take the belt off the pulley and have no power steering? AC driven off the same belt doesn't work anyway and we don't need it. Much upper body strength needed to go without? Thanks guys.
