looking for mileage theories 200 1987

It is a long sad story but I recently replaced both fuel pumps and now it seems like the mileage has improved. Today I noticed that the tailpipe is cleaner. It had always been a little sooty, but with unknown provenience and 250,000 miles... All this leads me to think that the mileage really is better with new fuel pumps.

Why would new fuel pumps produce better mileage ?
