Advice sought on how to diagnose the cause of a working but inaccurate fuel gauge 444-544

Hello Folks,
The fuel gauge on my '59 Duett works but it is inaccurate i.e. it indicates full when the tank is full but it drops precipitously so I'm uncertain as to how much fuel I actually have left, the end result being I am constantly fueling up at half a tank, which is very often since the tank only holds 9 gallons.
I was lucky enough to find a NOS fuel tank sending unit for the car & purchased it.
My question is, before I tackle the job of replacing the fuel sending unit, could there be another cause for the fuel gauge to be inaccurate that I should pursue diagnosing first?
Finally, if I have to replace the fuel tank sending unit, does anyone know if I will have to drop the tank to access the fuel sending unit? (my car & car manuals are in offsite winter storage). Off the top of my head I don't recall an access point to the fuel sending unit from inside the car (unlike my old Saab 95V4).
Thanks for any/all advice.
Regards,
Jim
