Manual trans car, should it start without clutch pedal pushed in?? 200 1990

Hi, I'm finishing up rebuilding a 1990 244 manual trans (M47). I was doing something the other day I can't recall but it required me to put the key in II position. Out of curiosity I tried to start the car without pushing in the clutch pedal. Low and behold it cranked right up!!

I was a bit surprised/shocked since all my previous non Volvo cars required the cluth be pressed in to start the car. Is a switch I dont know of faulty or is this correct for these autos?

Just curious to know, thanks!
