'93 245 battery/charging issue 200

Driven infrequently but no starting problems and no evidence of failing brushes (assuming still get that warning light glow on a '93). Car stalled on wife on interstate yesterday. Battery gone. Towed to trustworthy Indy shop, but want to get a handle on it today.
Does charging system still run through alternator warning light--i.e., if bulb burns out, battery won't charge?
If failing alternator/brushes still gives warning, does the situation suggest 1) bad battery, or 2 broken alternator wire? I once had occasion of wire fraying on a 240 on support (out of sight) about 6" from alternator. TIA
