Inner tie rod removal 700

I am trying to remove the inner tie rod on my '87 740 turbo wagon. I got the boot off and on the joint I don't see any flat spot where I could put my wrench onto. I read through the FAQ and it looks like the CAM/TRW style, but I don't understand how to take it off from the rack shaft gear. Do I really use a pipe wrench to unscrew it? Is there any locking mechanism?
