Smoked a Starter today 200

The starter on my 93 240 started the engine but the SRS light was on and I heard what I think was the starter still running but not engaged.

I opened the hood to see smoke billowing up from the area of the starter, I quickly shut it off and found the battery leads were quite warm.

Fortunately it's a stick shift and I was able to jump start with a push, no more smoke and the starter was not running. Plus I was able to drive home 20 miles without further issue.

Any idea what happened?

Thanks
Dan
