Air conditioning, compressor not clicking on; & Road Trip thoughts. 700

I haven't been on here in awhile, but now seems like a good time to return. My girlfriend and I have been driving my '91 740 quite a bit over the past 6 months and it's been generally good. I think most of the work I did on the car 4 years ago is paying off finally, lol.

The air conditioning has never worked since I've had the car. The compressor has never clicked on. I did grab a spare control head from the junkyard, and have recently fixed the broken solder spots on teh relay. Tonight I tried jumping across the pressure switch contacts per the FAQ, and the compressor still doesn't click on, but interestingly, the engine seems to undergo a transient in RPM when I apply or remove the jumper. I think my next move is to take it to an A/C shop to check if the refrigerant pressure. I suspect there is none. Does anyone have any other ideas?

We want to take the car on a trip of about 1200 km's (one way, so 2x that) to Vancouver BC in two weeks. I feel "mostly" good about it, but have the standard concerns about reliability for a long trip in such an old car. Lately I've been doig this trip in my 2008 Civic. Any thoughts? I have had the car inspected, for safety and general tune-up and have received the green light.

Thanks in advance.

Signed,

Cartman_sr (soon to return to being a regular poster, lol)
