So the car had started making a weird noise and severe vibration when I “gunned it” from a stand still. Initially I thought it might be either the DS support bearing or one or more of the U-joints.
After searching this site for previous posts on this symptom I included bad motor mounts as a possibility. To look at them the motor mounts seem OK, but since I had two new motor mounts and a tranny mount “in stock” I thought I would change them out. The mounts I have are URO and after reading a number of posts I concluded that they are crap. In my defense I bought them a long time ago for a different 240 ;>).
In any event I ordered some OE mounts from Tasca and they are in the mail.
Meanwhile I thought I would change out the tranny mount, since that one was manufactured by a different company, and presumably not crap.
The one that was in the car was broken right in half so I obviously thought that the tranny mount was the source of the noise and vibration after all.
Now, with the new tranny mount and two old motor mounts, the car is very smooth, even under “gunning it” situations.
So my questions are these…should I change out the motor mounts with the Tasca mounts as a preventative measure? I’ve had the car for about 250K miles and couldn’t find change out schedule recommendations either in the FAQ of this site or in the Bentley.
I understand that some 240s exhibit uninvited vibrations after new motor mounts have been installed. I would not like that at all. Does that happen with just certain brands of motor mounts?
Thanks for your input and opinions.
