Seal for transmission tunnel 444-544

Anyone have a diagram or share some insight as to what was used to prevent engine heat and residual gases from coming through the gear shift opening? I will be ordering a carpet kit soon and will want to address this issue beforehand? I have been hearing a great deal about DynaMat for blocking the noise and heat transfer into the interior cabin. It appears it can cost as much as the carpet kit! Is it truly worth it, or would regular carpet padding work as effectively? VP Autoparts seems to offer the best value. I've never ordered from them and wonder length of shipping times?

Thanks
