A/C, R134 900

The hot weather is here so time to start attending to A/C concerns.
A '93 940: compressor turns on and stays on, the A/C gauge shows HIGH PRESSURE, into the RED, Warning Zone, gradually pegging the needle as I tried to add an 8 oz can of R134. The air blows hot out of the vents, even though the compressor is running and all seems normal... There seemed to be a lot of green phosphorescent dye in the system. Could it be that the system was so overfilled with the dye as to pressurize it but which of course wouldn't cool, yet there wouldn't be space for the R134?
