My First Post Voltage, Battery, Alternator 700 1986

Hello, I am going to write my first post after having my 740GLE wagon for 18 months now.

I drive it about a few times week to haul stuff short distances. It has front body damage and no a/c but for what I use it for it is fine.

It never starts on its own though. I bought a large jump starter box that I keep in the car. Actually the first start of the day requires a jump start then the rest of the day it is fine. I took it to Autozone and was told I need an alternator and a battery but I'm not certain that is the problem. If it needed an alternator wouldn't it never start on it own?

I really do not know how to fix and replace car stuff too much but don't want to take it to a shop and have them rip me off. I'm pretty satisfied using the jump box every time, but if it is a less than $100 fix I'll go for it.
