Replaced trailing arm bushings without removing shocks. now axle won't align with bushing bolt. 200 1991

Yes I skipped a step. Couldn't get the lower shock bolts off. There now soaking in PT blaster. The job went smoothly for the most part. Burning out the the old bushings took less than ten minutes. When I attempted to align the bushing bolts, the trailing arm bushing holes extended past the axle by at least a half an inch. Perhaps with the shocks still hooked up, the problem could be that the arms can not be compressed enough to align the holes. Is there a trick that I'm missing here?
The 240 was hit hard in the rear before I bought it in 2006 . Apparently they replaced the drivers side quarter panel and rear bumper. I also recently noticed a small dimple in the frame in the wheel well on the drivers side. I'm getting this sick feeling this might not be a simple fix.
