I had my 1992 245 (222k) in for an oil change yesterday and some twerp reset the trip meter and now the odometer is no longer working. I never use the trip meter for that very reason. The odometer had a gear replaced at 142k, about 80k ago.
This morning, the trip meter and odometer were turning again, but every few miles the trip meter gets stuck (not always on the same 10th mile), so it's working off an on. Speedometer is fine.
1. Am I assuming correctly that this is still a gear problem? Maybe a broken tooth that is floating around?
2. I will try to do the repair myself this time, thanks to all the good tutorials online. How do I know which gear I need (25 or 26)? The car was manufactured in March 1992, and has a K39200 speedometer. I think the 25 will work either way but I'd rather get the correct one. I am planning on replacing the pod gear as well.
3. I only have an assortment of basic screwdrivers (flat and Philips) - are there any other special tools I need? This is my only transportation so I want to make sure I have everything when I start taking things apart.
4. While I am in there, is there a way to forward the odometer to reflect a more correct mileage - in other words, to add the miles that were lost?
5. Can I remove the trip reset button so nobody messes with it again?
Thanks!
