Neglected AW70 Fluid 700

ATF is a hydraulic fluid, and its an oil of course. It has no detergents. Some dispersants. The reason the bottom of the trans pan has a pile of fines in it is because there are no detergents. The oil allows them to settle out, which is a kind of filtering.
If the trans was being rebuilt synthetic would be a good choice. At your mileage it probably isn't needed. Save your money for a rebuild, which it may need anyways even if you change the oil.
You've made the right choice to change it.
