Checking voltage output at alternator 900 1994

Wife stranded while I am out of town - car won't start; I get back; battery totally dead; installed new battery.

I checked alternator with my meter, and it is putting out about 13.8 v. So that should be good.

But I noticed when I removed my pos batt cable - car idling - it died.

I thought this was a sign the alternator was bad.

Am I on / off track here?

Thanks.
