1974 164E Upper Ball Joints 140-160

I bought upper ball joints for my 1974 164E. Part number 686398. Part is branded Karlyn.

When I removed the ball joint from a spare upper control arm I have I see it has a clocking mark as per the Haynes book and has a slot in the socket portion at the base of the threaded rod to stop forward and aft movement of the rod. I have not removed the ones on the car or determined whether they are of the same design. On the replacements I bought I see no clocking mark and I see no slot in the socket as described. The boot is filled with grease from the manufacturer so I pushed it away with a knife to try to examine the slot but I do not see one.

I can not move the rod by hand to tell if it is in fact restricting movement.

Was the design of this part changed? Is the Karlyn part incorrect? Did I order the wrong part number?

Several websites confirm this part number for 1969 - 1975 140 160.

Thanks
