No Tranny Fluid on Stick 200 1992

Hi,

I checked this '92 240DL wagon out about a month ago. It's been sitting on the street for a year, being moved only for alternate side of the street parking by my mechanic for a friend who's in Europe.

145k miles. Interior's immaculate. 2nd party working AC. Automatic. No rust.

Everything was pretty cool until I stopped driving, shifted through the gears, let it sit for 3 minutes, and then checked the tranny fluid:

Nothing on the stick.

I'm not a mechanic. I'm handy. But I can't imagine what would've happened to that fluid unless there was a leak in the tranny.

I didn't mention it to the mechanic who's selling it for his friend, yet. Wanted to check around first. Is my intuition correct? It would make a perfect second car for my wife's urban gardening business. Our '90 240DL has 300k on it and the tranny's staying in 1st occasionally. Sometimes doesn't start.

Thanks for your time.
