Sadly? Many years ago? Seems like yesterday that vile stuff was still allowed around here. Can you fill me in? All I've heard is the bad of MTBE.

On topic, and for OP, the knock sensor is as Dave described it; same principal as the quartz in the bbq lighter or a crystal microphone. I think your plan to use a later version would work; at least better than your current arrangement in that 88. You'd probably not be able to measure the difference, but I agree the best approach is to get a used one of the one-terminal variety at your leisure. It will match the electrical and acoustic properties the ICU was expecting. Having it working in any fashion should increase the amount the ignition computer will allow it to advance. Good for the air, the fuel economy, and the motor.
