A/C Diagnostics 700

My 1991 740 has a full R12 charge and the A/C worked great until a few days ago when the compressor started to only run sporadically. The OBD test guide states there should be a 1-1-4 code when pressing the A/C control on and off. This code does not appear, just a rapidly blinking red light. I ran the same test on my '91 240 and got the 1-1-4 code. Is there a list of components that I should check out such as the low pressure switch or any other electrical components? I would like to test the most likely causes first before I take apart the dashboard to access the controller.
