Difficult Starting 200 1980

My Volvo does not like to start up, either in the mornings or afternoons. It has 134k miles and has been great until recently. About 1/3 times, I hear only one click, the complete silence. The other times, I hear the starter making normal sounds (like coughing) and it is trying hard to start. Then usually after a couple of minutes, the idiot lights dim and it's not trying so hard. I stop, fully charge the battery, and try again. Starter fluid occasionally helps. Eventually, it starts up and runs fine. I'd rather not take it to the shop, because they're not Volvo experts and I suspect it's something very easy that I'm missing. Perhaps it has to do with the CIS fuel injection? Thanks in advance!
