M46 noises 200 1981

Hi all,
Two years ago, I bought a NA 245. It's bone stock, and will probably stay that way, so please refrain from answering this question with "Get an M47" or "Swap in a T5". In second gear through fourth, there's a fairly obnoxious whining sound coming from the gearbox. It is speed related, because it gets louder the faster I go, and still happens in neutral. O/D, when engaged cuts the noise in half. There's no problem with the gears or synchros, it shifts well, stays in gear, and doesn't chunk or chatter. I've tracked down most of the bearings to rebuild it, but I'm having problems finding the needle bearings. I'm guessing that the noise I've got is the needle bearings. I put some redline in it, and that helped only slightly.

So, I have thought about T-5 and M47 swaps, but don't want to mess with speedo cable issues, or driveshaft modifications, blah-de-blah. This unit works very well, it's just noisy. The O/D works flawlessly, and I just want to make it quiet. So, anybody have a line on needle bearings? or a good used M46 (with a speedo cable), surely there must be a plethora of them somewhere with all of the M47 and T-5 swapping going on.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Matt
