whether the obd 1 is accurate and reliable or vague 200

hi sages- need your opinion/ advice on the obd 1 system on my 92 245. for about 3 mos now my check engine light has been on. there are no starting or driveability problems with the vehicle(fat mpg too 28-30). i have not done the obd 1 test on the fender yet. this is what i figure. please correct me where you think im wrong. think it is a dead oxygen sensor which screws into the exhaust pipe under the car. figure too the sensor is likely not dead but more likely the timer has timed out and triggered the light. will check the obd 1following instructionsand codes in bentley. if the code says oxygen sensor is stinko ,plan is to screw in anew one wire it upand clear the obd code and see if it retriggers. uncle moe warns me a clip joint dealer or indie will try to scam me for a new cat saying mine is stuffed and shyster me for at least $600. know from past experience that cats do get stuffed but only when they have so much back pressure that they cause acceleration problems and stalling do you replace. do not have a symptom like that. also not planning to go to the cleaners. anybody been there? always appreciate your advice. thanks tons oldduke
