Broken '83 240 speedo cable issue 200 1983

My speedometer quit working. This is a mechanical speedometer, of course.I climbed under the car and noticed a transmission drip at the knurled piece that screws into the transmission. Thinking it might just be loose, I gave it a couple of turns with some pliers. First the metal tube on the outer side of the knurled piece broke completely off, then I notice the part of the transmission that the knurled piece screws onto was just spinning and would even pull out entirely, which I'm sure is not supposed to happen. Anybody know what's going on here and what needs to be fixed? Thanks as always - Jim
