heater/coolant hardline 900

I am replacing the blown engine (original to the car) in my 91 940T. The replacement engine is a 1994 B230FT. It is sitting on a stand waiting to be installed. I was sitting, gazing in wonderment at this marvel of engineering, when I noticed that, Hey!, the hard pipe from the water pump back under the turbo and around the corner to the upper heater hose has an extra outlet! I checked my manual(s), and can't find any reference to this extra piece of pipe. It is located just behind the oil filter extension and is about 3 inches long, designed to accept a small hose ( one inch?), and comes off the hardpipe at 90 degrees. Can someone tell me what this was for? Obviously I will not need it, and I am thankful I did not throw away any parts off the old engine, but I am curious as to what this was for.
Thanks!
JD
