"thus causing the AMM to try to overcompensate?" Sound concept but incorrect wording. The AMM does not add fuel to your engine so it cannot compensate.

Unmetered air means the AMM does not know the engine is sucking it in. You AMM tells the ECM/ECU how much air is going in so the computer can guess how much fuel to add. The oxygen sensor tells the computer how close its guess was.
