Power Steering Pump or Rack? 700 1991

I got to thinking about the new ball joints and tie rod ends on the 740 and why the steering was acting up now and was fine when the car was parked this Spring. I could hear the PS pump relief valve bypassing while sitting still and cranking the steering wheel. The effort was the same in each direction.

So, after re-reading the 700/900 faqs on steering I thought I'd try stretching the spring in the PS pump as in the faqs. I have a parts car (actually 3) so took the spring out of the car and it was 48mm. I then took the spring out of the one that had the problem and it also was 48mm. I stretched one to 55mm (same as the person did in the faqs) and put it in the PS pump of the problem car.

The steering is very much improved and the relief valve bypass is almost gone. My daughter, the owner of the car, is happy so am I too. So, this is probably a band aid to a worn rack but it definitely helped a lot. Now I am guessing the problem was due to the new and tight fitting ball joints and outer tie rod ends. Maybe, after a few hundred miles to loosen up, the steering will improve even more.

Removing/stretching/replacing the spring is a 10 minute job. I used a 17mm wrench to remove the high pressure line connection and then a 7/8" box wrench to remove the relief assembly which consists of 3 parts. A magnet helps to pull out the 2nd piece and you can get the spring with your fingers. It is messy, with about a quart of fluid running out while the high pressure connection is removed.
