'92 240--One occasion of steering wheel extreme vibration 200

Had been driving for 10 minutes at @50 mph. Took a curve at speed and started up a hill/windy road at@45 mph, when extreme vibration started. Felt like worst case of balance or weights thrown. I don't recall any real pulling. Drove 3 miles at @40 mph and stopped for 10 minutes. Thought I noticed a burning rubber smell, but could have been another parked car. Saw nothing unusual. On way home.......no problem. Haven't experienced problem again, though have limited it to a couple test drives. Since problem disappeared, anything to do with the tires seems unlikely. Tie rod ends? This is the first time it has ever happened. What is likely cause?
TIA
