940 Leather Seats in 740 Base :-) 700

Yes, they do fit in the front. No, they do not fit in the back. Just as I have been told. Several times. ;-)

I bought them *anyway* because I can sew and make patterns and such.

Here is a bit of a writeup on what I plan to do with this set of seats.

I installed the passenger front tonight. It looks SOOOO much nicer than the old, beat, cloth one. It is also a bit more firm. The foam cushions in my 1990 740 and these 1993 940 seats are made of a different material. It is noticeable the first time you sit in the leather seat.

I finally figured out the problem with the passenger seatbelt. I disassembled the clock spring mechanism as well as the retractor lock itself.

Yes, it did come apart, but I knew what to expect and prevented any of the parts from coming out. I rewound the spring to be a bit tighter. This will help it to retract fully and a bit more quickly.

That let me finally install the seat and then the belt to the seat base. I have been working on this for about two months, on and off.)

I have a ton of work ahead of me to replace the shredded driver seat, though.

I have to fix or replace the slider rack on the bottom. It jams really badly at times. I sometimes need to slide it forward and then it will jam and I cannot get in the car at all.

Not cool.

The current, nasty, torn up driver seat is all manual. The replacement is all electric with memory, so it has all that very heavy junk living under there. I greatly prefer my all manual seat after 15 years of sitting in it; there are fewer things to break, and what it there is pretty simple to fix.

Here is the skinny on the two sets of front seats...

• New passenger seat installed
• New driver seat is incompatible with this car
• New driver seat foam and leather are good
• Old driver seat base is junk
• Old driver seat back adjustment is good
• Old passenger seat back adjuster is on wrong side
• Old passenger seat base is good

The new driver seat will be cobbled together from the old passenger seat base (R/L ambidextrous) and the old driver seat back. (They also seem to be ambidextrous, but the back angle adjustment knob seems to be pressed in and I cannot remove it, so I will use the old driver seat back on the passenger base. Weird, I know...) I will use the padding and leather from the new seat on this skeleton. It will have the 940 leather and more firm padding on the 740 skeleton.

Further, I think I need to take the leather seat base in to an upholstery shop to have one small repair done so that it does not end up tearing the leather.

That will actually be pretty inexpensive.

The rear seat base will fit fine, but the weird material that is stitched to the leather and holds the wire in place for the hog rings needs to be replaced or it will end up tearing loose, and the leather skin will end up coming off whenever someone slides onto it from the driver side.

The leather seat back will be a real handful.

The 940 seats are nearly identical and interchangeable with the 740 cars.

Nearly.

The seat back attachment points are 2" too high for my car. The seat back cannot be attached. You can hook in the top or the bottom, but no matter what, you cannot get it to lock into place.

The leather skin looks to be very similar in shape to the 740 cloth seat back but is taller and more pointy at the top; the rest looks really close. The center section is a separate thing on the leather seats, but I will skin the cloth and leather and lay them out for re-cuting. I will make a pattern for all the cloth panels and then alter the leather to fit. I may have to buy some leather to make some small panels for the parts that cannot be altered.

The only real issue here is the tuck points - the 940 seat back has more of them. Some do not have anchor points in the 740 padding/wire frame. I will have to think on this for some time. Perhaps the upholsterer can make it work. Perhaps not. I will worry about it when I need to.

Anyway, here is the firs of the 940 leather seats installed in my old 740. Pardon the missing parts and the mess. I have not finished up.
