Clutch engages with the pedal really low...new clutch cable, no adjustment left... 200

1985 240. I just replaced the clutch cable with a dealer part. Even with the cable adjusted out fully, it engages close to the floor...makes shifting really difficult because the clutch is partially (if only very slightly) engaged when the pedal is on the floor.

I rigged up a spacer on the clutch fork - added about 3/4" or so of thickness.

Shifts and drives SO MUCH better with this rig job. I'm OK to leave the rig job in place, but I have to wonder...What is the real problem? Could the fork be bent or something like that?
